To socialize in college, you should shed your inhibitions and make the first move. Finding college activities which interest you is one of the first things you can do. Try to be ready with simple conversation starters, like 'where are you from', 'what is your major', etc. Talking to strangers is not easy for some, especially if they have to initiate the conversation.
- Wear a pleasant smile.
- Maintain personal hygiene.
- Learn more about casual conversation starters. (No one wants to get into a heavy conversation during the first meet)
- Be kind and respectful to the people around. (Especially the ones serving you)
- Register on social networking and micro blogging sites. (Read Facebook and Twitter)
One of the best places to people is the cafeteria. Just walk into the cafeteria alone, and strike up a conversation about the food, or sit next to someone and thank them for allowing you the space. One of the things you could talk about are studies; ask about the persons major or about the classes that they are taking.
Most campuses will have clubs that suit the sense and sensibilities of each individual. Join one of these, as they are one of the best places to meet singles. If you love to act, find the drama club, if you dance, join the troupe, if chess is what fascinates you, join the chess club, etc. If there isn't one club that you like, you can always start your own club and invite others to join.
Nonprofit organizations are always on the lookout for volunteers, and they will most likely welcome you with open arms. If you can't find a group working towards the betterment of community, you can always join the environmental awareness groups, or even People for Ethical Treatment for Animals (PETA).
Events and Library
One of the fun places to socialize is at various college events, like basketball or football games. The environment at these events is highly charged with loyalty and support, making it a good space for you to meet your peers. If you are not into sports, hit the library and make some new contacts.
Just get out of your dorm and walk in the campus, you will surely bump into someone. Talking to the RA is also a good way to start your endeavor of talking to people on campus.
