PTE Academic Exam Pattern

There are three sections in the PTE exam. This exam is 3 hours long and is totally computer based.

Section 1: Speaking & Writing Section

  • It's a 77-93 minutes long exam depending on the prompts.
  • This section is conducted to assess your spoken English in an academic environment.
  • The writing section will require you to write responses using the correct grammar and spellings.
  • There are 7 question types in this section.

Types of Questions in Speaking & Writing Section

  1. Reading aloud
  2. Repeating the sentences
  3. Describing images
  4. Re-telling the lecture
  5. Answering short questions
  6. Summarizing written text
  7. Essay writing

Section 2: Reading Section

  • This section is 30-40 minutes long, depending on the prompt lengths.
  • The PTE Academic Section is designed to test your ability to read, write and listen to information provided in English. 
  • There are 5 question types in this section.

Types of Questions in Reading Section

  1. Multiple choice, Multiple answers
  2. Multiple choice, Single answer
  3. Re-qrdering paragraphs
  4. Reading: fill in the blanks
  5. Reading & Writing: fill in the blanks

Section 3: Listening Section

  • Its duration is 45- 57 minutes, depending on the prompts.
  • This section tests your ability to listen to, and comprehend spoken English (audio recordings).
  • There are 8 question types in this section.
